Introducing: Postcards from Izzy
I remember the first (and only) time I hired a pet sitter to look after my birds. I was told I’d get a call or text every other day letting me know how things were going.
Day 1: “The birds are ok.”
Day 3: “Pets are fine.”
Days 5, 7, 9, 11, 13: Nothing. No voicemails, no texts, not even a simple emoticon to reassure me. For all I knew my precious (and precocious) parrots had pooled together their rope toys, tied up the pet sitter, and were currently holding him for ransom. Sure, I could have called the pet sitter, but 1) I was out of the country and the phone bill would have been prohibitive; 2) I was trying to trust him and not be an overbearing flock mother; and 3) If he was being held for ransom, he couldn’t very well answer his phone anyway, now could he?
So while my dear friend Veró is away and I’m watching her dear pet cockatiel, I hope that these “Postcards from Izzy” give her what every pet owner temporarily separated from their beloved pets so desperately needs: a little peace of mind. And I hope you all enjoy this series, even if you aren’t a (crazy) owner of a (crazy) pet.

Love the photo! The kitties look all to eager to play with the bird
I don’t know if play is exactly what they have in mind, but they’re definitely eager for something! Thanks for commenting, Ellen!
