I really don’t like being impressionable, but hoo boy, it seems like I can be sometimes. Take today: one read of a post encouraging photographers to have blogs in lieu of websites (because apparently some photographers have horrible websites), and I’m on the bandwagon.
Although, maybe it’s not that I’m impressionable. Maybe I’m just really good at recognizing really good ideas.
Here’s why you might see my website fade away next month . . .
- My website is on my mind constantly: “I need to update it; I need to update it!” I’m not a fan of the self-imposed pressure. I mean, those are precious thought-moments that would be much better spent on “I need ice cream; I need ice cream!”
- Traffic to my blog–because, ahem, it’s updated with new content occasionally–is higher than to my website.
- Updating my website is time-consuming (because I’m exacting about the details), with little gain (because I’ve built it more as a portfolio rather than a hire-me-for-photography-or-graphic-design-work). The hours I’ve spent on things that have never made it online is not enviable. It’s become a distraction from what I should be doing. (And although I still don’t know what I should be doing, being distracted from whatever it is is still not good.)
- My blog is better at making room for my progression and evolution. It gives me the flexibility to change my mind once (read: The Good Done Blog), twice (read: Journeys of an Atypical Traveler), now three times without requiring a total rehaul of my presentation. Like last year’s fashion trends, new posts eclipse the old without a lot of fanfare.
- My annual URL registration and hosting fees will be due again in January. Don’t you think that $41.75 could be better spent on, oh, I don’t know, ice cream?
