I’m in the throes of starting my own business. Suddenly all those economics classes offered in college that I thought I’d have no use for are looking mighty practical. Fortunately, my recent foray into the intricacies of sales tax led me to Jeff of Small Business Solutions.
I had what I judged to be two simple questions: when do I charge sales tax for online purchases, and what rate do I charge? But that didn’t stop the Chicago Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Development Center from making me suffer through a 5-minute-long pre-recorded message, insisting I buy their $39 resource packet, then hanging up on me.
But Jeff happily answered my questions over the phone, no strings attached. He also sagely encouraged me to call the Illinois Department of Revenue in Springfield, adding “Don’t bother calling Chicago, they don’t know anything.” Truer words . . .
I thanked him profusely and sincerely. He explained that he was a CPA with lots of experience working with small businesses, and he talks fast, so he figured he might as well share his knowledge with others. I couldn’t agree more. Thanks, Jeff, you done good. And if you order my greeting cards, I’d wave the 10.25% tax for in-state purchases if I could.
